European Language Resource Association (ELRA)
Description: The European Language Resource Association (ELRA) was established with the purpose to provide language resources in Europe for the academic and commercial fields. The material here can be used for different purposes. However, one should note that it is subject to payment and it rarely represents a necessity for the conduction of linguistic research. Nevertheless, the data is well structured, documented, evaluated and is also subject to quality control.
Description: Ethnologue is a list of languages and countries that contains information on their distribution, number of speakers, typological classification, etc. Originating from the evangelical translations of the Bible, this list represents one of the most important and complete sources of information for many unknown languages.
The Online Database of Interlinear Text (ODIN)
Description: Interlinear texts with glossaries in different languages are included in linguistic research (in particular for languages that are not popular and are threatened by extinction, dialects, or multilingual projects). The Online Database of Interlinear Text (ODIN) develops a search engine that finds texts from available sources and makes them searchable.
Open Language Archives Community (OLAC)
Description: For the exchange of information on relevant language resources, the Open Language Archives Community (OLAC) made numerous documents and proposals. Based on a librarian approach the descriptions of relevant resources are, for instance, documented and defined in compliance with the requirements of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI).
Virtual Language Observatory (VLO)
Description: The Virtual Language Observatory (VLO) provides a catalogue for language resources that are mainly used by field researches and academic institutions. The observatory gives an option to search for a particular resource type, language and region which makes the process more convenient, as it also covers unknown languages and cultures from all over the world.
